The AGMtechnology became popular in the early 1980s as a sealed lead-acid battery for military aircraft, vehicles and UPS to reduce weight and increase reliability. Sulphuric acid is absorbed by a very thin fiberglass mat, which makes the battery resistant to flooding - this allows the transport of hazardous materials without restrictions.
The AGM battery has a very low internal resistance, so it can deliver high voltage on demand and offers a relatively long service life - even in deep cycles. AGM is maintenance-free, provides good electrical reliability and is lighter than a lead-acid type battery. While lead-acid batteries require recharging every six months to prevent sulphate build-up, AGM batteries are less susceptible to sulfurisation and stay in storage longer before recharging becomes necessary. A battery tolerates low temperatures well and has a low self-discharge rate.
