The Ultrastar DC HC300 series are capacity drives designed for both traditional IT storage arrays and cloud-based distributed server storage. The WD DC HC310 is a more efficient and cost-effective air-attached hard drive compared to the previous 4 TB helium version.
IT managers must offer layers of storage by implementing purpose-built solutions to meet on-premises, off-premises and cloud storage requirements. Helium-filled drives provide the highest capacity, while air-filled drives offer significant benefits. Lower TCA (total cost of acquisition), legacy options and higher access density (IOP/TB) make them an excellent choice for maintaining desired performance levels while allowing customers to tailor their budget to their needs.
The Ultrastar DC HC300 series helps meet data center requirements by providing 4TB to 10TB of capacity while improving performance over previous generations. They are designed for a variety of applications, including traditional storage arrays, rack-mounted storage enclosures and distributed server-based storage systems, as well as distributed and scalable computing, including block and file-based storage architectures. They are offered with 7200 RPM and SATA 6 Gb/s or SAS 12 Gb/s interfaces in Advanced Format 41kn and 512e formats. A 572n option is also available on 4 TB models to support legacy systems with native 512-byte block sizes.
TheUltrastar DC HC300 Series drives are based on a proven and cost-effective airline design with conventional magnetic recording (CMR) technology in a 3.5-inch form factor. These drives use common hardware and firmware, while featuring a second-generation two-stage micro-actuatorthat improves head positioning accuracy for better drive performance.
The increase in write performance is also supported by Western Digital's Media Cache architecture, a disk-based caching technology that provides a large cache area for improved reliability and data integrity. Finally, the addition of flash-based non-volatile cache (NVC) on both SATA and SAS models helps improve write performance.
Compliance and privacy requirements drive the need for increased data security. The Ultrastar DC HC300 series offers security and encryption options to help protect data from unauthorized use, including SED models in both SATA and SAS configurations. A version with SED-FIPS validation is available in SAS configurations. The Ultrastar DC HC300 series extends Western Digital's long tradition of reliability leadership with an MTBF of 2 million hours and workloads up to 550 TB per year.
