1. How to configure Voice VLAN to optimize voice traffic transmission on smart and managed TP-Link switches using the new GUI?

Introduction

Voice traffic is usually more time sensitive and may be more affected by packet loss than data traffic. You can configure Voice VLAN to optimize the transmission of voice traffic. Voice VLAN can change the priority of 802.1p voice packets and transmit packets in the desired VLAN.

Network requirements

As shown in the figure below, two IP phones are connected to port 1/0/1 and port 1/0/2 of the switch. The PC is connected to port 1/0/3 of the switch. The switch is connected to the Internet through a router via port 1/0/4. IP phones transmit voice traffic while the computer transmits data traffic. Voice traffic requires higher priority than data traffic.

Configuration diagram

To implement this requirement, you can configure it as follows:

1) Create a VLAN 2 and add port 1/0/1, port 1/0/2 and port 1/0/4 to your VLAN.

2) Configure VLAN 2 as Voice VLAN and set the voice traffic priority to 7.

3) Switch on the Voice VLAN on ports 1/0/1 and 1/0/2.

Configuration steps

For the T2600G-28TS, the following sections describe the configuration procedure.

Step 1

Select the L2 FUNCTIONS> VLAN> 802.1Q VLAN> VLAN Configuration menu and click Add to load the next page. Create a VLAN 2 for voice traffic. Enter the name of the VLAN as Voice_VLAN. There is no need to add ports that are connected to IP phones. Just add the uplink port 1/0/4 to your VLAN 2, for example, set it here as an un-tagged port. Click Create.

Step 2

Select the QoS> Voice VLAN> Global Config menu to load the next page. Enable Voice VLAN around the world. Set the VLAN ID to 2 and set the priority to 7 . Click Apply .

Step 3


Select the QoS> Voice VLAN> Config Port menu to load the next page. Enable Voice VLAN on ports 1/0/1 and 1/0/2. Click Apply .

Step 4

Select the QoS> Voice VLAN> OUI Config menu to load the next page. Check the OUI table. Make sure that the OUI address of the voice device is in this table. If the source MAC address of the packet matches the OUI address in the OUI list, the switch identifies the packet as a voice packet and processes it based on the voice VLAN configuration.

How to configure VLAN tagging options (802.1Q) on manageable L2 switches?

Virtual Local Area Network configuration is based on logical network topology settings rather than physical network connections. Computers in the same VLAN communicate with each other if they are connected to the local network. They cannot connect to computers on other VLANs.
The following describes how to configure VLAN tags on L2 managed switches.
Network topology:

This example uses TL-SG5428E and TL-SG3424.
Connect the network cable to port 1 of the TL-SG3424. To access the Internet, connect the TL-R480T+ to port 9 of TL-SL5428E.
Connect group A computers to port 2-3 of TL-SL5428E and port 2-3 of TL-SG3424. Group B computers use ports 4-8 of the TL-SL-SL5428T+.

Configuring VLAN parameters:

	VLAN 100	VLAN 101	VLAN 102

In order to implement paragraph 1, a VLAN with an identifier of 100 shall be established.
To realize item 2, create a VLAN with the identifier 101.
By creating VLAN 100 and VLAN 101, you can also realize point no. 1. 3 requirements have also been implemented.
To realize point 4, you must create a VLAN with VLAN ID 102.

PART I: Defining connection types for ports:

TRUNK: The trunk port can be operated by multiple VLANs and used for cascading network devices (e.g. two switches). The default option for Egress rule is TAG.
GENERAL: General ports can also be provided for multiple VLANs. The default option for Egress rule is UNTAG (computers usually accept only untagged frames).
ACCESS: This port can be assigned to a single VLAN identifier.
The following figure shows how to configure the Link Type option for port 1, for example:

Other ports can be configured in a similar way (see below).

Part II: Creating VLANs:

According to the first table, it is necessary to create 3 vlan networks: VLAN100, VLAN101, VLAN102.
Select 802.1Q VLAN->VLAN Config and press Create. In a new window, you can create a new VLAN (see below).

Then create another 2 VLANs (see below).

Part III: PVID setting

The PVID (VLAN port identifier) is the default VID of the port. If the switch receives unlabeled frames, VLAN tags will be added according to the PVID of the port before forwarding them.

For example, the PVID for port 2 is 100. When the switch receives an untagged frame on port 2 of the computer, the switch will tag a network frame with an identifier of 100. This frame will therefore only be transmitted to ports that belong to VLAN 100.
