The Ultrastar DC HC550 series is designed to meet the growing demand for data space in public and private cloud environments where storage density and cost-effective infrastructure are critical. The WD DC HC550 delivers 29% more capacity than 14TB helium-filled drives and a 21% lower Watts/TB ratio compared to 14TB helium-filled Ultrastar drives.
Data center decisions are driven by Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Higher capacity hard drives play a leading role in lowering TCO. An 18TB data center hard drive provides 29% more capacity in the same form factor as a 14TB hard drive. Western Digital introduces the 18TB Ultrastar® DC HC550 hard drive. Built using HelioSeal technology, the industry's only fifth-generation helium platform and the foundation for our high-capacity DC HC500 series, the Ultrastar DC HC550 is designed for public and private cloud environments where storage density, Watts/TB and cost/TB are critical parameters in creating the most cost-effective infrastructure.
HelioSeal technology enables the Ultrastar DC HC550 drive to have one of the lowest power profiles in the industry, helping data center architects meet green goals and requirements. Designed to support workloads up to 550TB per year, the Ultrastar DC HC550 is based on conventional magnetic recording (CMR) technology for ease of installation in enterprise and cloud data centers.
The 18 TB capacity is achieved by combining technologies that improve areal density with technologies that improve performance and reduce power consumption. The WD HC550 is the industry's first hard drive to feature Energy-Assisted Magnetic Recording (EAMR) technology to improve write performance and thus increase areal density. The industry's first three-stage actuator (TSA) improves head positioning accuracy, provides better performance and higher areal density.
With massive capacity and unmatched reliability, the Ultrastar DC HC550 is ideal for object storage deployments. Compliance and privacy requirements drive the need for increased data security. The Ultrastar DC HC550 offers security and encryption options to help protect data from unauthorized use on both SATA and SAS models.
