Ubiquiti UVC G4 DOME camera - presentation and configuration

G4 Dome is a waterproof dome camera from Ubiquiti. As the manufacturer assures, it provides a crystal-clear image during the day and at night. The housing made of high-quality materials that protect against weather conditions allows to install the device indoors and outdoors. It can record video at 24 frames per second. The maximum resolution is 5 Megapixels (2688 x 1512), the weight is 370g (without mounting brackets), and the dimensions are Ø109.2 x 64.5 mm. It uses the H.265 video codec . Also noteworthy are the high viewing angles - 102.4°, vertically 71.4°, diagonally 134.3°. Additionally, built-in microphone and speaker make it a very functional device.

Ubiquiti UVC G4 DOME camera is designed to be mounted on a wall or ceiling. The kit includes a set of mounting brackets, as well as various screws and wall plugs, depending on the surface to which it will be attached. Without unnecessary expenses we can even mount the device to a drywall.

A few important tips before configuration

The reset button has two functions

• restoring factory settings (press for 10-20 sec. when the camera is on)
• restarting (quick pressing and releasing the button)

Meaning of the LEDs:

• White - camera ready for configuration
• White blinking fast - initiating
• White blinking slowly/flashing - restoring factory settings
• Blue - the device has successfully connected to the network and is working properly
• Blue LED blinking alternately - motion detected
• Alternating white blue - software update in progress, do not touch or disconnect and recovery mode
• Flashing red - recording
• Steady red - error, failure (recommended reboot)

Configuration of the device is very simple but before starting it we should prepare the already configured devices such as :

• switch or poe adapter that provides access to the Internet and power supply (in our case it is a USW-INDUSTRIAL switch)
• DVR or modem that provides Internet access and video recording (we use UDM PRO Machine)

We can also use other devices from Ubiquiti's offer such as UniFi Dream Machine Pro, UniFi Protect Network Video Recorder or UniFi Cloud Key Plus.

Connect the camera to the switch via Ethernet cable and download the UniFi PROTECT application.

The first time you launch UniFi Protect, the application will ask you to enable Bluetooth and other features necessary to ensure the best possible use of the camera functions. By going through the various tabs in the application, you can set all the parameters to your liking. The installation process is shown step-by-step below.

We put the G4 and G3 series cameras together. They were tested in terms of the quality of day and night images taken, as well as the specifications of each model. The UniFi Protect G4 Dome is distinguished by its vandal-resistant housing, which can withstand an impact energy of 5 joules and is splash-proof(IPx4). The microphone and speaker are also installed inside the housing.

The cameras were also tested for the quality of the recorded image. All the devices were placed in the same place. For each of them we used 1, 2, 3, and 4 times zoom. The results are presented in the galleries below.

Ubiquiti G4 DOME is a camera ideally suited for installation in video surveillance systems in offices, warehouses, residential premises, educational institutions. Made of metal, the compact housing can withstand impacts with an energy of up to 5 joules, so it resists attacks from unwanted visitors. The camera can be easily configured from your phone via the Unifi PROTECT app. The device is also equipped with software for motion detection and the ability to record in the dark.
