Slow internet speed even with a new router? There's a solution for that!

You bought a fabulous new router, connected a super-fast service from your ISP, but the Internet speed on your computer or laptop remained the same - this means that there may be a problem with your computer. How to solve this problem quickly and inexpensively - let's consider further.

If you've gone through most of the options that you think lowered your Internet speed - you've connected a more efficient data plan from your provider, you've also used our tips from the previous article"What causes Internet speed drops and can you fix it?", and you've replaced your router with a newer/powerful/more efficient one - and none of that helped.... That still leaves a few options to look at, check and fix.

Checking your computer for viruses

Although the latest Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems have a pretty good powerful antivirus, it would be a good idea to run it manually from time to time to check your computer for viruses, which in turn will not only reduce your Internet speed and computer performance, but can also pull out your personal information, payment system information and other important data.

If you have purchased other antivirus software, this is a plus, but you should also not overdo it, there is no need to install more than one antivirus program. In this case, multiple installed antivirus programs will only interfere with the proper and fast operation of the computer.

After checking your computer or laptop for viruses - move on to the next point.

Cable Internet

If your computer or laptop is connected with a cable (patchcord) to the router - it is worth checking the cable (patchcord). Some ISPs skimp on LAN cables, and instead of a good eight-core cable, they may put in a medium-quality four-core cable, which can ideally transmit data at speeds of up to 100Mbit/s.

If everything is fine with the cable, the next stumbling block is the ports on your router and computer/laptop. You need to find out if your router has ports with transmission speeds higher than 100Mbps. Usually these ports are 1 Gbit/s.
However, the problem may lie with your laptop or computer. Even a working LAN port can be faulty and may give speeds of 100 Mbit/s, or even 10 Mbit/s instead of the normal 1Gbit/s.

This can be fixed quickly and cheaply by buying a USB to RJ45 adapter, which will replace the network card in your laptop or computer. Companies such as ASUS, TP-Link, D-Link produce inexpensive USB adapters that will help you solve the problem of a faulty RJ45 port on your device.

Wireless Internet

Now let's look at a variant, if your laptop or computer is connected to the router wirelessly. And after replacing the router and Internet service, the download speed is still slow - then you should pay attention to the Wi-Fi module on your device. The module itself may be old and not support new technologies, so it can transfer data at slow speeds. In older laptops, the module can still be replaced, but it's best to leave this work to a service technician so as not to accidentally damage the device.

However, there is a simpler, cheaper solution - a USB Wi-Fi module that can be easily connected to a computer or laptop. Depending on the model and price, these modules can support different data transmission standards and speeds. They can also be connected directly to a USB port or via a USB docking station and an extension cable, allowing the connection to be made with the computer placed under the table and the Wi-Fi receiver itself on the table.

These Wi-Fi modules are quite affordable and easy to install. Take, for example, the model Totolink X6100UA. This Wi-Fi module can operate at both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. It supports transmission standards such as IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax, allowing for a total data transfer of up to 1774.5Mbps, which is even faster than with an Ethernet cable.

It is also convenient that these adapters connect to a computer or laptop without installing additional software and drivers. The system itself will detect the device and install the necessary drivers. All you have to do is connect to the wireless network, enter the password and enjoy high-speed Internet.

Summary

As you can see, the problem may lie not only in the router or low Internet speed from the ISP. However, any problem can be solved without paying a lot of money for it. With external USB - RJ45 or USB - Wi-Fi adapters, we can easily solve the problem of outdated or damaged network equipment in a computer or laptop.
You can find a wide selection of these adapters from manufacturers such as TP-Link, D-Link, Asus or Totolink at the best prices on our site.
